This Is Not A Tragedy
The sound of people surrounded the vicinity, children crying, children laughing, families and single beings in a hurry to catch their flight to the next destination in their life. The KokIA airport was filled, per usual, another casual day. For hours, he watched them and every second just kept him smiling, even if he spotted an argument in the midst of the crowd, but for the most part, he saw happy faces and families excited for their trip into the sky. This made him happy and as much as he’d like to, he couldn’t keep from smiling as he watched them. He knew he could sit there for hours and watch them, and every few hours, he’d get up and walk around, sit at another part of the airport and listen to the people and you did hear so many things from them, you learned even just by watching them if you couldn’t hear. It was never boring, at least to him. It was an experience every single time.
Ian continued his expedition around the airport until his sight caught hold of an average-sized bouncing ball roll towards him, stopping at his feet. “What’s this?” he spoke to himself, slightly smiling as he picked it up carefully and looked around. “I wonder....who this belongs to...” there were so many people, it was hard to tell.
“Hey!”
“Hm?” Ian glanced to the side to see a young woman rush up to him as fast as she could with her bulging stomach carrying an unborn child. “I-I’m sorry! That would be mine”, the woman smiled “it’s an early birthday gift.” For a moment, there was a slight pause, the woman tilted her head to the side making Ian realize he was staring, turning bright red he shyly handed the ball to her. “Sorry...” he muttered. The woman chuckled lightly and smiled sweetly, “No, it’s alright! You seem a bit flustered, is something on your mind?” Ian could feel the warmth on his face as he blushed, trying to think of a reasonable response to his staring, it wasn’t because of attraction, while she was a very pretty lady, there was something else that caught his attention. “N-no...You...well, you remind me of someone, that’s all...” he managed to say. “Really? May I ask who?” she asked kindly, her eyes watching him, obviously finding amusement in his shy persona. “Um...ah....well that’s...kinda awkward...but, um....I guess you remind me of my mom....You...look a lot like her...” The woman’s face beamed at the statement, it was like a compliment and it showed on her features how she appreciated such a flattering remark. “Do I really?” Ian nodded and kinda smiled, “Yeah...except, hair color...she often dyed it a pale blonde...” “I see. I’d like to meet her!”
There was a still, a silence, for Ian was not sure how to reply to that last statement, but finally he spoke up. “That’d be nice....but she passed away some time ago...” The woman instantly looked upset and apologetic, “Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know......may...I be so bold as to ask how she passed away?” Ian wasn’t sure why he was talking about this, especially to a complete stranger, but she seemed nice enough and it wasn’t like it was a big secret as to what happened to his family. “Plane crash...”
She looked shocked, her hand instantly over her mouth as if subconsciously ordered to do so. “That’s...that’s so sad....is that why you’re here? At the airport?” Ian shook his head, “No...it’s not....I like it here, there’s a lot of people to watch....you can find so many different faces, sad, angry, lonely, lost.. And happy of course.” a small smile played on his lips and the woman lowered her hand and had to smile at that last phrase. “That sounds nice...what’s your name?” “Ian...my friend sometimes calls me Angel though...” “Angel, that’s a nice name... My name is Koudelka” She extended her hand to shake his and he accepted. “Hey...come sit with me and have something to drink, my flight doesn’t leave for a while, I got here a bit too early,” she laughed, “If it’s not too much trouble.” Ian wasn’t really all that sure why, but he agreed and followed her to a small, open cafe in the airport and sat down at an empty table. There was a rather long silence in between then, or at least it felt long to Ian, his perception of reality was lacking so he really didn’t try to judge how long time had passed. He stared at the table, tracing penciled lines with the tips of his fingers, probably drawn in by children.
“Here.” Ian looked up to see Koudelka place a warm cup of hot-chocolate in front of him. “Thank you...” he murmured, feeling shy again. Koudelka sat down and took a sip of her own drink before looking back at Ian. “May I ask what happened to your eye?” Ian blinked, he had almost forgotten about the situation with his left eye. “Oh, um...well....that’s a long story...just...an accident that caused me to lose my eye...” The woman watched him with concern, “That’s terrible, you seem to live quite a life...” Ian chuckled, “Oh indeed...but that’s okay....I have friends to help me.” “That’s good,” Koudelka replied, “Friends are so essential to life sometimes...at least one, if that...someone to smile at, to make smile, to have a shoulder to cry on or to be the shoulder. Someone who you can make safe and who makes you feel safe...” Ian nodded in agreement, a kind of sad smile rested on his pretty features.
“Hey...so....boy or girl? You know?” Koudelka paused a moment and then giggled, “I don’t know, I like surprises.” “Got name ideas?” She kind of shrugged and smiled, “Well...kind of, but they aren’t solid names...” “What do you have so far?” Ian questioned. “Well...if it’s a boy.... I might name him Amon...or Grey. As for girls, well, I think Alice or Evan would be nice.” Ian paused at the last name given but then smiled a bit, “My mom’s name was Evan...” Koudelka gave a half astonished look but it slowly slipped into a small smile, “Really? Evans’ my middle name too.” Ian kind of laughed, “Common name or coincidence?” A pause, “That’s weird.....but kind of cool at the same time.” Koudelka laughed. “What about a husband?” Koudelka shook her head, “Recently divorced” “Oh, I’m sorry...” She waved her hand in dismissal, “It's fine. What about you, have a special lady-friend? Or even gentleman-friend?” Koudelka giggled but it wasn’t to make fun of him, her question was honest and blunt and Ian just shook his head, “No...No one right now...” Koudelka lingered in silence a moment before showing that bright smile again, “You’ll find someone...”
“Maybe I have...”
For a long time they talked, about anything, everything, and nothing. To Ian, it was nice, to talk to a complete stranger who didn’t judge right away and took the time to talk, listen and try to understand, it felt sincere and real. Not that he thought how his friends treated him was fake, but here was a woman who he had just met, she was free to judge him as she wanted, but never once did he feel judged or looked down upon. In her eyes, she saw simply what she saw, a boy with a troubled mind, but with a gentle heart and a need to be accepted, loved and protected. Yet at the same time, a boy who wanted to accept, love and protect those he cared for.
“How old are you anyways?” she asked, curious.
“Eighteen...”
“So young, yet faced with many challenges.” She smiled, her fiery eyes shifted to her watch and she let out a slight gasp. “Oh no! My flight! I’m late!” Ian blinked, feeling a slight tinge of sorrow knowing his new friend had to go, and it felt too soon. Ian stood up and accompanied her to her destination. Unfortunately, the flight had left already, she had missed it. “I’m sorry....I made you miss your flight”, Ian muttered, disappointed in himself for taking up her time. Koudelka playfully pushed him and smiled, “Apologizing for talking to an old maid like me? Nonsense! I’ll just wait for the next plane!” “You don’t look old to me...” Ian admitted, which made Koudelka grin a bit, “Well I am only in my mid-20s but I feel so old! Haha!”
While they chatted, they were interrupted by a horrible shriek and the sound of something slicing the air outside, like a missile almost. Every head turned towards the clear glass windows only to witness the inconceivable sight of a plane exploding in mid-air, instantly engulfed in blazing flames. Bits and pieces fell like feathers towards the ground; the fire illuminated everything in sight and the screams of people echoed maddeningly throughout. They stood in awe and Koudelka carefully took one of Ian’s hands in her own, holding it tight, while her other hand rested gently at the base of her neck, stunned and frozen. Ian could only stare, it was grotesque, but at the same time, the inferno in the sky was beautiful, it swirled and spun like a giant butterfly made of flames and metal parts, descending back towards the ground.
That was her flight, he shortly realized. That was the flight she had missed, that he had accidentally made her miss from all their chatter and because of that, she was standing next to him and not smoldering in that hellish blaze. Flights would go according to schedule with the exception of the portion where the plane had gone down. No words were said, no words of assurance, nothing, just pure silence. The whole place seemed much quieter now, even his mind had hushed. They stood there, at the entrance, her flight was boarding. “Aren’t you afraid?”, Ian spoke softly. Koudelka looked at Ian and smiled reassuringly, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t afraid, but I can’t ignore it. I have to go.” “But...” She shook her head and put a finger to her mouth to silence him. “We only live -our- lives once and if we live behind fear, we cannot say we are truly living it. I plan to live my life as if I‘m just experiencing it for the first time, everyday, if I’m afraid then I’m afraid, I will have to face it. If I’m sad, I will find happiness. If I’m in danger, I’ll be saved until it’s my time.”, she smiled. “You live up to your name well...” Ian understood the last phrase and smiled, “You’re very strange...” Koudelka laughed and hugged Ian, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.
“Be strong, tragic Angel, play the tune you were meant to play, dance, smile and believe...”
And with a cheerful grin, she turned and walked away.
End.
