Original Story of Ragnarok
(This was translated by Mike Landon, the Tester of Ragnarok Online from USA)
A long and grueling holy war waged on for many years.
The war between God, the humans and the demons caused a great deal of damage to everyone involved. After the war, human beings entered into a truce with God and the demons.
This uneasy period of peace would last a thousand years. In the times of peace, in the world of Midgard, the humans would eventually forget about the miseries and hardships of war. They became conceited and selfish with little knowledge of their part in the war of the past.
Bizarre occurrences begin to break the balance of peace in several places of Midgard. A roaring sound that blocks God, humans and demons suddenly appears. Unprovoked attacks from wild animals along with earthquakes and tidal waves ravish the people of Midgard.
As the peace begins to break down, legends of the mysterious demons begin to be told by various adventurers. Stories of Ymir, which has been responsible for maintaining the peace for so long, begin to circulate as well.
Excited adventurers begin to search for these pieces. Some search for wealth, others to make a name for themselves and some for their own twisted goals. The search begins without anyone knowing the true essence of the pieces of Ymir....
(Disclaimer: This translation was taken from RO Empire. What an awesome site.)
When making your character, you can choose from these beginning classes.
• Archers use bows and arrows to shoot enemies at long range.
• Swordsmen deal with swords, spears, and excel in direct combat.
• Thieves utilize their ability to hide and use sneaky tactics.
• Mages specialize in their knowledge of magic and offensive spells.
• Merchants initially have lesser battle skills, compensated for by the skill Mammonite (grants magnified attack at the cost of some zeny) and the ability to carry a cart (where large amounts of healing items could be stored and used in battle). Makes deals for better prices with NPCs, and vends items to other players.
• Acolytes harness heavenly power to aid themselves and others. They can also cast debilitating effects on enemies and have both resistance and bonus damage to demons and undead.
You can also choose from the advanced classes.
• Knight – The primary second class of the Swordsman has powerful melee skills and mastery of the two-handed sword and spear. Also has a skill which enables ability to rent and ride a PecoPeco.
• Crusader – The alternate second class of the Swordsman excels with shield skills as well as healing and holy magic. Has the ability to rent and ride a Grand Pecopeco and use spear skills, like the Knight.
• Assassin – The primary second class of the Thief uses katars or daggers in both hands. Can apply poison to their attacks.
• Rogue – The alternate second class of the Thief uses bows or daggers while sneaking around and/or stripping enemies of their equipment, lowering their effectiveness in battle. Has the ability to copy one offensive skill from other enemies when the Rogue is attacked by that certain skill.
• Wizard – The primary second class of the Mage uses powerful, wide-range magic of the elements: Fire, Water, Wind and Earth.
• Sage – The alternate second class of the Mage can give temporary elemental enchantments to weapons or small areas. Also has a unique skill allowing the Sage to cast spells while walking, and cancelling enemies spells and boosts.
• Hunter – The primary second class of the Archer has further mastery of bows and long-range attacks. Can use traps to kill, immobilize or give enemies status ailments. Can rent a trained falcon that can assist in battle.
• Bard and Dancer – The alternate second classes of the Archer can sing and dance to support party members with various boosts. Male Archers can become Bards, while female Archers can become Dancers.
• Blacksmith – The primary second class of the Merchant can forge all sorts of weapons, even those with specific elements. Has weapon mastery and combat abilities relating to maces and axes.
• Alchemist – The alternate second class of the Merchant can make and throw healing and offensive potions. Has the ability to protect other players' armor and weapons from being stripped by the Rogue class. This class is more defense based, unlike the attack-based Blacksmith.
• Priest – The primary second class of the Acolyte has powerful healing and supportive holy abilities and can exorcise the undead.
• Monk – The alternate second class of the Acolyte uses strength-based fist attacks, spiritual sphere skills, combo-based skills and the deadly "Asura Strike" ability.
There are also special classes that are available.
• Tae Kwon Boy/Girl – A martial arts themed character specializing in various kicks is currently in beta testing on kRO. Little is yet known about it and the two 2nd classes, Star Gladiator and Soul Linker. However, it was scheduled for release for kRO on October 2005, although some free servers have tried to add the Tae Kwon class.
• Ninja – A new class released on 03/06/2006 and currently being tested on kRO sakray. They can have two different skill builds: Assassination, which is based on physical and melee attacks using kunais, shurikens, daggers and even zeny as weapons, and the Ways of the Blade build, in which they can perform many jutsus (ninja magic spells) to do elemental damage, like summoning a fire dragon or ice spears, quite similar to the mages. Most of the ninjas elemental skills need elemental stones to be used, and their physical attacks can also have special properties by using elemental kunais. Becoming a Ninja requires Job Level 10 as a Novice.
• Gunslinger – Possibly the most technologically advanced class in the game, gunslingers utilize shotguns, grenade launchers, pistols, rifles and gatling guns. Each gun has special characteristics, like more attack speed with less power or more power with slower attack speed. Many gunslinger skills need coins to be used, similar to the Monk's Spirit Spheres. Coins can be found with their skill Flip a Coin and they can carry a max of 10. They were released for beta test on kRO sakray on 03/06/2006, along with ninja class. Just like ninjas and tae kwon boys, the player can turn a novice into a gunslinger upon reaching Job Level 10.
• Soul Linker – One of the second classes for Taekwon Boy. He plays somewhat like a Priest, a Bard, and a Wizard, with some attacking magics, that affect medium and small monsters, class specific buffs that he cannot use on himself, and some buffs with various affects (such as reviving a character upon its death, or reflecting magic used against the character). The hardest part of leveling is the drastic build change that occurs when changing to this class (he goes from a Monk-like build to a Priest-like build).
• Star Gladiator – The Star Gladiator is more closely related to the Taekwon Boy, since, unlike Soul Linker, the build stays the same (his build could be made similar to the Monk build). He uses some skills that become related to a specific location in the world (once used, that location is marked forever) or a monster (the target can be reassigned).
Also you want to choose a hometown for your character. These are the different towns in Ragnarok Online.
Prontera
The capital city of Rune-Midgard, located right in the center of the map. It is the center of commerce for most servers, as well as the home to the acolyte, knight and crusader classes. Prontera also houses the only official church in the game, and is the place to go to get married and is the easiest place for many novices to start, due to the abundance of low-level creatures.
Izlude
Satellite of Prontera. Izlude is the official home of the swordsmen. Izlude's port is also the only place by which one can reach Byalan Island and Jawaii (for married couples).
Geffen
Located northwest of Prontera. Home of the Magician Academy, where novices may become magicians. Geffen is also home to the Guild of Wizards and the Blacksmith Association. Geffen Tower, located in the center of the city, has a small dungeon which comprise its lower levels. The Wizard and Blacksmith guilds can also be found here. The superdungeon Glast Heim is located nearby and is generally considered a satellite dungeon due to its relatively close proximity and easy accessibility from Geffen.
Payon
A city nestled within the forest of the same name. This city is reminiscent of ancient Korean culture. It is located southeast of Prontera.
Archer Village
A small village loccated above Payon, where one can become an Archer. It can also be called the satellite city of Payon. There is a Zombie Cave located there which is a famous training ground for 1st Class beginners.
Alberta
A port city to the south of Payon, and home of the merchants. Alberta's port is the only means of accessing the sunken ship, Turtle Island, Amatsu, Kunlun, and Louyang excluding teleport. The city also plays host to numerous low-level creatures.
Morroc
An Arabic-themed desert city south of Prontera. Novices can become thieves in the pyramid just northwest of Morroc and assassins in the desert to the east of Morroc. This city is surrounded by a large number of medium level creatures.
Al de Baran
Due north of Prontera, with its large clock tower, which serves as a dungeon. Al de Baran is also the only way to reach Lutie (via Santa Claus). The Alchemist guild can be found here.
Lutie
Also known as Christmas Town, is the home of Santa Claus and the toy factory dungeon. As suggested by its name, it snows every day.
Comodo
Gambling capital of the Southwest, is a cross between Hawaii and Las Vegas. Night is eternal in the city, and fireworks can be seen in the sky at all times. Comodo's main attraction is its (non-playable) casino, and good leveling spots nearby. The Bard and Dancer guild can be found here. Added to iRO in August 2003. This city has two high levels and one medium level dungeon.
Juno
A large city north of Al de Baran, and the capital of the Scwartzveld Republic, a kingdom separate from Rune-Midgard. The Sage guild can be found here. The pathway to Transcendent Classes may also be found in here, in the Northwest corner of the city. Added to iRO in May 2004.
Amatsu
Styled after Ancient Japan. Here the pink-white blossoms of the cherry (sakura) trees are always in bloom. One of the city's major draws is the Tatami Maze. Amatsu was the first product of the "Global Project", in which new cities with themes based on countries with licensed RO servers were (and still are) added in rapid succession. Amatsu was added to iRO in September 2004.
Gonryun
Designed in Ancient Taiwanese style. Outside of iRO, it is known as Kunlun. In October 2004, Gonryun became the second city in the Global Project to be added to iRO.
Umbala
A lost village, located to the north of Comodo. Home of the self-denominated Utan tribe. It was added to iRO in November 2004.
Jawaii
Not completely a village or city, more of an Island. Commonly nicknamed the "Honeymoon Island." Most married couples go here to celebrate their marriage (and only married players are allowed to go there. Unmarried players can only reach Jawaii's pub for a drink and can not go out of the pub). It was added to iRO in March 2005.
Nifflheim
A city of the dead. There are many kinds of undead and demon monsters here, and the city may only be reached through Umbala's Yggdrassil Tree. It was added to iRO in December 2004
Louyang
Designed in Ancient Chinese style. It was added to iRO in March 2005. Is the third city of Global Project.
Ayothaya
Designed after ancient Thailand. Featuring the atmosphere of the former Thai capital in Ayutthaya period, it was added to iRO on 19th April, is the fourth and actually the last city of Global Project.
Einbroch
A city made from steel, supposedly being one of the first cities in the Schwartzveld Republic to go through the real-life equivalent of the Industrial Revolution. It was added to iRO October 2005.
Einbech
A small mining town and satellite city to Einbroch. Added to iRO with Einbroch.
Lighthalzen
A city of commerce. It was added in June 2005 to kRO, and implemented in iRO as of March 21st, 2006.
Hugel
A small 'Garden City' town that currently serves an entrance to the Odin Dungeon. It was added on January 2006 to kRO. Located near the Hugel Fields on the Destin's Glorious Kingdom.
Please ignore some of the definitions like “Added to kRO at…” These are direct definitions from Wikipedia. Yes. I was too lazy to type it all up.
